Susan’s journey in healthcare began with a profound commitment to patient care and has evolved into a distinguished career in addiction treatment and advanced nursing practice. Starting her career as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the emergency room, Susan gained invaluable experience in fast-paced, high-stress environments where she learned the importance of quick decision-making, compassion, and holistic care. Her years in the ER ignited a passion for helping individuals in crisis, especially those struggling with substance use disorders.

In 2009, Susan’s interest in addiction treatment led her to transition into the field of addiction medicine. Recognizing the growing need for specialized care, she pursued a certification in addiction medicine and treatment, a significant milestone that deepened her understanding and skill set in helping individuals battling addiction. Her work in this field fueled her desire to continue learning and making a more significant impact on the lives of those she served.

In 2022, Susan took a bold step in her professional development by obtaining her Doctorate in Advanced Nursing Practice (DNP). This achievement not only enhanced her clinical expertise but also solidified her role as a leader in the nursing field. Throughout her career, Susan has always prioritized the importance of ongoing education, continually seeking ways to expand her knowledge and capabilities.

During her doctoral studies, Susan dedicated four years of research to examining the length of stays for alcohol detoxification. Her research sought to answer a critical question: what is the optimal length of stay for individuals undergoing alcohol detoxification, given the lack of standardization in treatment protocols? Susan’s findings were groundbreaking, offering valuable insights that could guide clinical practice and improve outcomes for patients. Her research was presented to the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) in 2022, where she shared her findings and advocated for evidence-based practices that could benefit individuals in early recovery. Additionally, Susan was invited to present her research at the ASAM convention in Ohio, where she delivered a poster presentation that sparked conversation and further exploration in the addiction medicine community. This robust research also led her to teach as an adjunct professor for twelve years at Rutgers University, further educating young aspiring students in the field, where Susan was able to further implement a mobile crisis unit to bring addiction treatment to the underserved in Newark, NJ.

Today, Susan continues her work at Avatar Recovery Center as a Medicated Assisted Treatment (MAT) professional, where she plays a crucial role in supporting clients on their path to long-term recovery. Her dedication to her patients goes beyond the clinical aspect; she is deeply committed to being present with clients, understanding their unique journeys, and going the extra mile to help them achieve their recovery goals. Susan’s compassionate approach and tireless work ethic have made her an invaluable asset to the Avatar Recovery Center team, where her expertise in addiction medicine and her patient-centered care help guide individuals toward a life of sobriety and sustained well-being.
